Character Questionnaire: Sebastian

Since a lot of you really seemed to enjoy Tuesday's post about Amelia, I thought today it would be fun to answer these questions for my other MC and Amelia's boyfriend, Sebastian!

Again, I got these questions from writeworld, so feel free to grab them from there if you want to do this for your own characters!

Sebastian is an eighteen year old high school senior and is the opposite of Amelia in almost every way. Where she is a type A personality, GPA-obsessed, hot-headed genius, Sebastian is a type B, easygoing mind who loves to paint and feel the sand between his toes. While others around him worry themselves to death about what the future holds, Sebastian takes things one day at a time and uses painting as an emotional outlet.

And like Amelia, he is dead.

What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?

Sebastian Lucas Blake. Everyone calls him Sebastian except for Amelia, who calls him Bash.

What is your character’s hair color? Eye color?

Dark brown hair (darker than Amelia's) and summer green eyes.

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

Sebastian has a slight gap in between his two front teeth (which I love so so much)

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?

No birthmarks or scars! (of any importance, anyway)

Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?

Sebastian lives with his parents and has three older sisters and a handful of nieces and nephews. He's a bit of a loner and surrounds himself with a few close friends, but mostly Amelia. He would spend every waking moment with her if he could.

Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?

Sebastian was born in Mexico, but his family moved to California soon after. Since then he has lived all over the state until they moved to the same town as Amelia when she and Sebastian were in middle school. For Sebastian, home is where Amelia is.

Where does your character go when he’s angry?

Sebastian is one of those incredibly frustrating people who almost never get angry, so he doesn't really have a designated place to go.

What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?

Sebastian's biggest fear is failing to provide for Amelia. He wants to follow his heart and his passions but sometimes he worries that it won't be enough. He actually hasn't told Amelia this because he knows that admitting that he plans on marrying her will probably scare her and start an argument.

Does she have a secret?

Yep. He bought Amelia an engagement ring before they died.

What makes your character laugh out loud?

Amelia.

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?

Sebastian fell in love with Amelia the day they got caught outside in a rainstorm. Instead of complaining, Amelia started laughing and dancing around in the rain. Sebastian realized then and there he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can?

Sebastian's fridge is filled with his mom's home cooking, his floor is a mess with who knows what, his nightstand is probably covered in paint supplies, and his garbage can has scrapped sketches in it.

Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?

Sebastian is barefoot as often as he can be, and if he has to wear shoes, flip-flops will do him just fine.

When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?

His mom's cooking, which is generally Spanish dishes with lots of spices and vegetables from their garden.

Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?

Sebastian is pretty sentimental and usually finds a reason to keep even the most insignificant things. He could throw away basic things like trash, but he would probably struggle to get rid of anything that could have art potential.

It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?

Sebastian is either at the beach with Amelia or painting somewhere. He likes to be with Amelia as often as possible, but her intense focus on school and college hinders that a lot.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

Sebastian's grandma once told him a story about a man who tried to do what everyone else wanted him to do and did not find happiness until he chose his own path. It's the story that inspired him to pursue painting and art, and it's a big reason why he handles life easily rather than stress all the time.

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with?

Sebastian is probably planning on taking Amelia on a date--probably to the beach or somewhere downtown. He wouldn't dress up or anything, but he would definitely make sure to tell Amelia she looks beautiful--even if she's in her pajamas.
