Character Questionnaire: Amelia

Hey guys! I am sorry for my lack of activity on the blog/social media lately. I have been super busy, but on top of that I am about to be going through a lot of unexpected changes over the next month. While I don't want to go into full detail, my day-to-day schedule is going to completely change and I have a lot of things to figure out and organize before that happens.
Unfortunately, my motivation has taken a huge plummet with all of this new stress. I have had no desire to tweet, pin, blog, or write at all. In fact, the only reason I am writing this post is because I need something to take my mind off of the chaos my life has become!
I know I promised posts based on the information I learned at the Michigan Writing Workshop, and I promise those will be written soon, but for now I needed to do something a little more fun on the blog. So, I want to take some time to talk about my current WIP, Awaken. Specifically, the characters!
I found these fun questions on writeworld and decided to run my MC, Amelia, through them.
I hope you enjoy learning a little more about her!

Amelia is an eighteen year old high school senior. She is a type A personality, loves sunflowers and rain, has a 4.0 GPA and is the best player on her school's volleyball team. On the outside, she is a perfectly put together genius with a bright future ahead of her. But on the inside, she's a lost and confused kid with deeply rooted anger issues and no idea what to do with her life.
Also, she's dead.

What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?

Amelia Lynn Miller. And multiple! Her sister (Hazel) calls her Amey, and her boyfriend (Sebastian) calls her Raindrop. Almost everyone also calls her Ames.

What is your character’s hair color? Eye color?

Amelia has dark coffee brown curls and sapphire blue eyes.

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

Amelia's nose is slightly crooked because she broke it playing with her dad when she was little.

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?

No birthmark that I know of, but she does have scars on her left knee due to surgery she had to have after injuring it playing volleyball.

Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?

Amelia lives with her mother and her eleven year-old sister, Hazel. Her best friends are Emmy and her boyfriend, Sebastian. She surrounds herself mostly with Sebastian and Emmy, but she's closest to Sebastian and Hazel. She wishes she were closer to her mother, as all they do when they see each other is fight and bicker.

Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?

Amelia was born in San Fransisco, but she and her sister and mother moved to a smaller (fictional) city in California after her father left. For her, home is at the beach.

Where does your character go when he’s angry?

Depending on the time of day, Amelia either goes to her room or she'll call Sebastian or Emmy/go to on of their houses.

What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?

Amelia's biggest fear is not living up to the expectations of those around her (regardless of whether or not she even desires to meet those expectations.) She has never told this to anyone because she hasn't actually personally acknowledged that it's her biggest fear.

Does she have a secret?

Mmm... not yet.

What makes your character laugh out loud?

Sebastian!

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?

Amelia has loved Sebastian since they met Freshman year, only she's never been able to admit it to herself until after they die. Her heart broke when she and Sebastian broke up (literally seconds before they die)

What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can?

Leftover pizza and Chinese food, volleyball gear and clothes, ZzzQuil, a college rejection letter.

Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?

Amelia is barefoot in the sand and quietly hoping that the waves will come and wash away all of her stress and anxieties.

When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?

Goulash. Her Mom would make delicious batches all the time before she started working two jobs.

Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?

Amelia isn't super sentimental, so she would probably throw out all of the things that she didn't need. She would think logically rather than with her heart, so I can only imagine her keeping things she truly needs.

It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?

Amelia is probably filling out college applications or researching different degrees and jobs online while desperately wishing to go outside or sneak away to the beach with Sebastian. Emmy is probably texting her a thousand times asking to hang out.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

Amelia has the image of her father getting into a taxi plastered in her mind. Her dad had kissed her goodbye and promised to see her soon. She watched him get in a taxi from the window, and he never came back.

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with?

If she's going out for fun she would be with Emmy wearing something casual and comfy, and probably going bowling or downtown for food and shopping. If she's going on a date, she'd be with Sebastian on the way to the beach for night swimming and seashell collecting.

And that's a little about Amelia!

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your Tuesday!

  1. I feel like I missed something because I am so confused and intrigued right now. Both your main characters are already dead?

I don't know much about this, but that opening paragraph about Amelia -- or some version of it -- seems like it would make a killer character synopsis for a query or something.

    1. Haha that makes me very happy! Yes, both Amelia and Sebastian are dead. The book begins right after they wake up in an afterworld-like place called Peace. And thank you! I'm glad you're intrigued :)

  2. It sounds like Amelia's dead so I wonder if her answers change post-mortem? She sounds like a great character! Hope to read the story someday. Keep writing!

    1. Thank you! Amelia is in fact dead, but her answers don't actually change--which may sound confusing, but all I can say is you'll have to read the book some day to understand :) Thanks for reading!
